The challenge - Mr. A
Mr. A is a mid-level executive in the service industry and
director of an operational department with 80 staff members.
He is technical competent and has been promoted due to his
technical know-how and ability to get things done.
Lately several of the best people in his department have
resigned, including one of his key managers. Colleagues point
to Mr. A's abrupt and autocratic leadership style as the cause
of the staff changes. Employees in the department respect
Mr. A's functional know-how but also agree that he does not
listen to his team and is unable to see other points of view.
RIGHThought worked with Mr. A through the service package
"The Fix"
focusing on immediate leadership behavior. In four two-hour
sessions, Mr. A was confronted with his own leadership style,
through discussion, role-play and looking at alternative ways
of leading. As a result, Mr. A:
- Gained awareness of how he's seen by others
- Built a wider range of responses to difficult situations,
based on better listening skills
- Showed more empathy and understanding in dealing with
peers and subordinates
To maintain these new skills, Mr. A is still receiving coaching
in a short session every second month. As a result, Mr. A
has a clear growth path for his leadership style with more
empowerment and better use of motivational tools.
